Sailing to Southampton Water
Southampton Water offers both great shelter as well as some interesting places to visit.
As you head up Southampton Water passing Fawley refinery on the Western side you will find Hythe Marina. Located on the edge of the New Forest it’s a unique development of a 206-berth marina, waterside homes, shops, restaurants and bars.
Ocean Village is situated in the shelter of Southampton water and right in the heart of Southampton.It is surrounded by a wealth of shops, restaurants, bars and cinemas offering outstanding recreational facilities.
The city is home to some of the region’s best concert halls and venues, boasting three outstanding art galleries and two magnificent theatres.
Continuing up the Itchen River you will find Saxon’s Wharf and Shamrock Quay both providing full facilities as well as a variety of bars and restaurants.

General Access Info:
- Southampton water stretches for 6 miles and is well protected in all but strong S/E winds
- All craft should heed the priority given to commercial traffic
- There is an area of concern between the entrance of Southampton Water and Cowes. Any vessel over 150m must be given a moving prohibited zone of 1000m ahead and 100m either side
- The turning point around West Bramble and Calshot Spit is particularly restricted
- Double HW occurs at Springs about 2 hrs apart, while at Neaps there is a long stand.

Situated on the Western shore of Southampton Water Hythe is approached via a dredged channel leading to a lock basin.
